House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., declared in an interview on Fox News on Friday that Bush appointee Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito was an “insurrection sympathizer” while also denounced Judge Clarence Thomas.
Jeffries’ barb comes as Alito and his wife, Martha Ann, continue to face criticism for previously flying a “Call to Heaven” flag that featured a pine tree in the background.
The flag became associated with the Capitol protests on January 6, 2021, as some of the protesters who broke into the Capitol carried the flag, an apparent throwback to its colonial significance. The flag itself dates back to the American Revolution, when it was used extensively at sea by Continental Army ships in the 1770s.
The pine tree is Maine’s symbol and state tree, and the title “Pray to Heaven” describes the colonists’ hope that God would save them from British tyranny.
Alito’s wife turns flag upside down after argument with insulting neighbor
Asked about criticism of Justices Alito and Clarence Thomas, Jeffries told Fox News’ Chad Pegram that “the American people are almost unanimous in their opinion that the right-wing justices on the Supreme Court are completely out of control.”
“Judge Alito appears to be an insurgent sympathizer, joined by his right-wing friend Clarence Thomas,” Jeffries said, because Democrats often use the term to describe people participating in protests and Former President Trump.
Jeffries calls Trump’s meeting with Republicans on Capitol Hill ‘shameful and embarrassing’ [they] Hope to welcome back the commander-in-chief of the uprising as a conquering hero.
Jeffries also commented that high-ranking judges are unable to police themselves when it comes to ethics and there are more problems. “Since Trump nominated the three justices, there have been “radical partisan, right-wing, extreme decisions.”

“[T]That’s why Democrats won after fall 2022…and did well.
In May, Alito responded to criticism for flying a “Calling to Heaven” flag at his home in Alexandria, Virginia, following the Capitol protests, telling Fox News that his wife had no intention of displaying the flag. The reason has nothing to do with this.
Alito claimed that Martha placed the sign in response to insults directed at her by her neighbors, saying the situation began when a neighbor posted an “F-Trump” sign near a school bus stop.
Alito recently responded in a letter to Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., and Dick Durbin, D-Ill., asking him to recuse himself from the Trump v. United States case and anything related to the Jan. 6 Alito vigorously rejected their requests regarding the case.
“[Martha-Ann] “I did not fly it to associate myself with that group or any other group, and the use of an old historical flag by a new group does not necessarily exhaust all other meanings of that flag,” Alito wrote.

He added: “A reasonable person, but not motivated by political or ideological considerations or a desire to influence the Supreme Court case, would conclude that this incident does not meet the applicable recusal standards. Therefore, I It is your responsibility to deny your request for recusal.
