Winter is coming in the north
Photographs taken from overhead show a bird flying from the woods over the coastline, mountains, hills and towards the stone fortress to the north. The narrator explains the meaning of duty and sacrifice, and how the North has had a great responsibility to the Seven Kingdoms since the days of the First Men. Since ancient times, “we have been the guardians against cold and darkness.” This is the night watchman. Under the rule of his ancestor King Torrhen Stark, one in ten men would be chosen to strengthen the guard. It is an honor and a responsibility for those who serve the North. He warned that as winter approaches, the north must prepare.
We meet Cregan Stark, who is explaining their ancestral duties to Jakaris. The prince mentions his oath to King Viserys and how the unity of the kingdom is threatened. Kerrigan said his duties oscillate between the North and the South. He worried about guarding the walls—especially in the winter. Even the dragons refused to cross the Wall, and Cregan asked Jakaris, “Do you think my ancestors built the Wall to protect against wind, snow, and barbarians?” The prince soon discovered that it could stave off death.
Cregan offers his Greybeard troops. As they chatted, Kerrigan received a message from the Queen and looked at Jakaris. Apparently, this is news about Luthras’ death.
Sorrow and Fury in Dragonstone
Jakaris is away, but something is going on at home. A dragon lands on Dragonstone; it’s Rhaena.
Daemon prepares to kill Vargarhar and tries to convince Rhaena to double team with him. “Son to son,” he said. Rhaena advises him not to act out of revengeful impulses. Daemon retorts that if she got the urge, she would end Aegon and his band, referring to the Season 1 finale where she and her dragons burst through the floor at his coronation, refusing to roast them all Ripe.
For a moment, we see Queen Rhaena, looking out to sea from a cliff. Her face was filled with anger, sadness and guilt.
Collis walked to the dock on crutches. He sees the ship being cleaned and prepared, and another new character is introduced: Erin Hull. Aelin briefed him on the ship’s condition, but their conversation was awkward. In Season 1, when Corliss fell ill, the man dragged him out to sea and brought him to safety.
King’s Landing Fear
Events switch to King’s Landing, where Vhagar flies in to prepare for landing. Troops were told to stop, indicating they were ready for an attack by the Black Team. Inside the castle, Aegon is in his chambers looking for his heir to teach him the lessons of “king”. His sister-in-law Helena said she was afraid – not of the army, but of the rats. It’s unclear what she meant.
Elsewhere in the palace, Allison and Christon were seen getting very close before going to meet the Council. They dressed and hurried off to the meeting, her father, Otto Hightower, said, and letters to the north went unanswered. However, Prince Aemond’s pact with House Baratheon of the Stormlands should cement their allegiance. But there was a problem, Rhaenyra sealed the bay with Corlys’s sea fleet. The committee also found that “Princess Rhaenyra” did not want to negotiate.
Since her blockade is affecting the situation in King’s Landing, they need the help of the Lannisters and the Hightowers to break the blockade. They also needed help from the Riverlands, and Aegon said he would just use Vhagar to burn anyone who wasn’t on his side. Alicent tried to stop this, and glared at Aemond, stating that Vaghajar must remain in King’s Landing to prevent Rhaenyra from seeking revenge for her son’s death.
After the meeting, cunning manipulator Larys Strong reveals to Allison that he killed her old employees and handpicked new ones for her. He’s the original Littlefinger in every way.
Lucerys is honored, revenge is on the way
Rhaenyra and Sirax landed on the beach, where dragon wings were discovered. In one harrowing scene, she discovers Lucerys’ clothes wrapped in netting and she wails – as does Sirax. Her pain is palpable.
In King’s Landing, the inexperienced King Aegon struts into the throne room and begins listening to the townspeople’s petitions. The first man lamented that his flock had been taken away before winter, and the king wanted to return the man’s sheep, but Otto advised against this. He said people should pay tithes on livestock to feed dragons in preparation for war. Aegon protested, but the ever-controlling Otto refused.
Next up is Hugh, a blacksmith who asks for an advance so they can buy iron to make weapons. “Our victory depends on the efforts of the little man,” Aegon said, granting the man’s petition. Otto didn’t like this. Clubfoot (Laris Strong) takes Aegon aside and makes him suspicious of Otto. They all wanted to control Aegon, but he convinced the child that his grandfather was a bad idea and that he should be the “Hand.”
Alicent, also affected by clubfoot, argued with her father for undermining her interests at a council meeting. She also defended Eamond’s psychopathic behavior, saying Luke was never punished for cutting his eye. Pooh.
The intrigue at Dragonstone becomes even more intense when the crew discovers Mythalia the White Worm stowed away on a ship. Damon confronts his former lover, asking him if he betrayed secrets to Otto. She said she went with the highest bidder and was sent to the dungeon. He then confronts Sir Eric about working for Otto. Eric once again pledged his fealty to Rhaenyra, admitting that the Hightowers pitted him and his twin brother against each other. Damon walked out and headed to the war room.
Rhaenyra entered the room and everyone gathered around the painted table. They all gave updates and the only thing she said was “I want Aemond Targaryen”. Understood.
Daemon visits White Worm in the dungeon, but she doesn’t move. He then offers to trade her knowledge for her freedom. We later found out she accepted.
Jakaris approaches his mother in her private chambers to report to her who is helping, including Lord Cregan, who promises to send 2,000 men. He could barely stand it and started sobbing while talking to his queen/mother. Lucerys family will rest in peace.
Back in King’s Landing, Allison lights a candle in front of the altar and hesitates to say Lucerys’ name. Meanwhile, Rhaenyra and her family lit a pyre for her son. She throws something she found on the beach – Lucerys’ cloak – but young Joffrey throws a small toy into the fire in memory of his brother.
Blood and cheese join the fight
At dawn, Daemon arrived on the shores of King’s Landing in disguise. He bribed a guard, who hated Hightower, to take him inside. He spoke to the castle’s Rat Catcher and attempted to hire him as Aemond’s killer. We already knew it wasn’t going to be as successful as everyone thought, but he took the job.
Aemond and Christon discuss war strategy in the prince’s chambers, and Aemond complains that his mother and grandfather are too cautious. He wanted to be more aggressive, but Christon said his mother had a soft spot for Rhaenyra.
Kristen left when Otto walked in, and Grandpa already knew how Aemond felt. He told him that Vhagar and Aemond were a strong team, but that he needed to calm down as there were other factors at play. To emphasize the point, he told him that his brother didn’t know how to control his impulses.
Tense scenes unfold as we follow the rat catcher, who is traveling through a tunnel with a dog and another man he hires to do the job. In A Song of Ice and Fire, this pair is known as Blood and Cheese, two unscrupulous assassins. They crawled into the castle and ended up in the throne room, where they overheard Aegon and his friends talking and brainstorming. The king was clearly distraught. Two killers sneaked into Eamond’s residence after a row over being denied access to the upper floor where the royal family was staying.
Unable to find the prince, they lurked. But apart from the queen’s sisters and Aegon’s children, they couldn’t find any members of the royal family. The rat catcher held a knife to her throat and argued about killing her baby. They forced her to point out which one was the male heir, and she told the truth. Shockingly, they beheaded the child.
Traumatized, Helana ran out of the room and headed to her mother’s place, where she was having sex with Christon. Although they were not Aemond, they gave birth to a son and a son.
