North Carolina will launch digital driver’s licenses in the summer of 2025, giving residents the option to replace traditional physical licenses.
According to ZDNET, those who opt in will have their digital IDs stored in a secure app on their phones. The license will contain all the same information as the physical ID and can be updated as needed. Some states allow adding IDs to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet on mobile devices.

The state joins a growing list of states that have or are developing digital licensing programs: Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, New York and Utah. More than a dozen other states are planning to implement the program, with plans in early stages of development or imminent.
Louisiana pioneered the program in 2018, and by 2023, 66% of eligible adults had opted for digital ID. While people may have questions about security, the convenience of ID may be its broadest appeal. IDScan.net said these digital ID cards require biometric access to set up the feature and then undergo additional verification.
