The Times verified and analyzed more than 60 user-generated videos, cable footage shot in Nuserat on June 8, and footage shot by Times reporters in Nuserat showing damage to buildings. Journalists geolocated the locations, cross-referenced videos of the damage visible in satellite images taken on June 1, June 7, June 9 and June 10 to map the locations of the attacks and the events on June 8 Map of buildings damaged or destroyed during operations.
The analysis concluded that at least 19 strikes occurred and at least 42 buildings were damaged or destroyed. Totals are not visible in the article because the map zooms to areas with the most attacks and buildings damaged or destroyed.
The New York Times also used the footage to map where victims’ bodies were found after the June 8 operation. The videos and images shown in the article were provided to The Times by eyewitnesses, shot by The Times’ Gaza correspondents, and publicly released by the Israeli military and police, posted on social media or distributed through news wires. The websites of some of the films were first verified by The Times after being geolocated by online analysts including fdov and Anno Nemo.
The satellite image used as the base map for this article was taken by Planet Labs on June 10.
