The Paris Olympics are in full swing, with nearly 7,000 athletes from 206 delegations competing for bronze, silver and, of course, gold medals.
As of 8:30 a.m. ET Monday, 30 teams had earned at least one medal, but the only team in double digits was the United States, with 12 medals. Won 9 medals; Japan has 8; South Korea has 7; Australia, Great Britain and Italy have 6 each.
While the United States may be the nation with the most medals so far, gold is a different story. China’s five gold medals – two more than the United States – put it at the top of the official Olympic medal list. Japan, South Korea and Australia are also ahead of the United States, with four gold medals each.
Before the Olympics, analytics firm Gracenote predicted the U.S. team would win the most medals. Gracenote predicts that the United States team is also likely to win the most gold medals, and the biggest threat will be athletes from China.
Today, no country officially “wins” the Olympics, but winning the most medals or gold medals is still a symbol of victory for a participating country.
