One of the new additions to our garden this summer is lavender. When we lived in California we had lavender growing in our yard which was incredible, but in Minnesota perennial lavender simply doesn’t survive. But we took a chance and planted some annual lavender and it worked wonders! I’ve been harvesting and drying it for use in making lavender spray and even some edible lavender.
I have so many lavender sprays that I have them in every room now. When I sprayed it on my daughter’s pillow before bed, she asked me what I was doing. I explained to her that it was a Lavender sleep spray Help her get a good night’s sleep. I asked her to smell the bottle and she immediately yawned at me! Not exactly a scientific study, but it clearly works for her.
this Lavender Pillow Spray It’s easy to make with just 3 or 4 simple ingredients. Let’s get started…
What is lavender spray?
So what is Lavender room spray? It’s essentially an aromatherapy spray that uses lavender essential oil (and dry lavender leaves if desired!) to keep your house smelling fresh and promote restful sleep. The scent of lavender has been shown to improve sleep quality and wake up feeling refreshed ( source ). This lavender spray can be used as a pillow spray, room spray or body spray.
Required raw materials
- witch hazel – Use it because it helps bind water and essential oils together. Otherwise the essential oil will degrade over time and the fragrance will not be retained. Ideally, you want to use pure witch hazel like this one.
- distilled water – It is better to use distilled water as it lasts longer.
- lavender essential oil – Use pure lavender essential oil. Add more or less (approximately 20 drops) depending on your preferred scent.
- Optional: dried lavender – I have a lot of dried lavender in my garden so I like to add this for a visual effect and to add the essence of lavender. But this is completely optional.
How to Make Lavender Spray
- Add witch hazel
Fill the bottle halfway with witch hazel.
- add distilled water
Fill the remainder of the bottle almost to the top with distilled water (leaving a little room for the essential oils).
- Add essential oils
Add about 15-30 drops of lavender essential oil. Start with 15 drops and add more as desired. Close the top and shake well.
- Optional: add dried lavender flowers
Place a sprig or two of dried lavender flowers in the bottle.
FAQ
Spray directly onto pillows and sheets for the most effective spray effect. This room spray adheres best to fabrics so you’ll get the best results. That being said, you can spray it directly on your body/clothes or just in your room.
Technically, you can substitute rubbing alcohol or high-strength vodka for witch hazel. I prefer using it with witch hazel, but you can use what you have.
No! I like adding it for a visual effect but very little added scent. You can get a lot of lavender from lavender essential oil alone.
Storage instructions
Your lavender spray will keep for up to 6 months. It may last longer, but I find that the smell starts to dissipate after a few months.
