The Oval Invincibles returned to winning ways as they eased past Manchester Originals in the 100th at Old Trafford at the Emirates Stadium.
Paige Scholfield and Marizanne Kapp took control of the match with an unbeaten 67 runs off 37 balls as the home team posted 125 runs for four. In-form Schofield laid the foundation with 33 off 36 balls in the first match, hitting 48 off 27 balls.
The Invincibles were equally impressive on the field, highlighted by a series of sharp catches, with Australian leg-spinner Amanda Jade Wellington taking 2-22.
Both teams will be looking to bounce back after Sunday’s disappointing result. The original team lost to rivals Northern Superchargers, while the Invincibles arguably lost a derby against London Spirit, setting a rare two-game winless streak.
After a slow start, the Raw team posted an unbeaten 25 after the powerplay, with openers Laura Wolvaardt and Beth Mooney finding the ropes seven times in 15 balls .
Mooney, the No. 2 draft pick, was just getting started, and CiarĂ¡n Smale had a great chance at No. 3 with the help of Rianna Macdonald-Gay. Gay then picked up the ball at midfield and beat Woolwart, the game’s second-leading scorer.
The original team started to slow down, hitting 34 without a boundary until captain Sophie Ecclestone added some much-needed late power to remain unbeaten on 26 off 15 balls.
The Invincibles began to prove that it was not enough on a good pitch, with Sri Lankan star Athapaththu and captain Lauren Winfield-Hill scoring 48 for the first wicket.
Alice Monaghan eliminated Winfield-Hill and Alice Capsey in quick succession, while Athapaththu defeated Katherine Bryce (Kathryn Bryce) Still to finish at 60-3 at light pounds.
Schofield ensured any nerves were short-lived as she found the rope seven times while Kapp added 19 runs from 11 to power the Invincibles’ home side with seven balls to spare.
Man of the Match: Paige Schofield
“I really enjoyed it. We had a couple of tough games in a row. You learn more from defeats than wins and we went away and studied what happened and I thought we were more disciplined today.
