International Business Machines Corporation (NYSE: ) announced on Tuesday that it will launch a series of artificial intelligence models as open source software and help Saudi Arabia train artificial intelligence systems in Arabic.
Unlike competitors such as Microsoft (NASDAQ: ), International Business Machines Corporation is taking an open-access approach similar to Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: ) to make its “Granite” artificial intelligence model customizable by companies.
Granite tools are designed to help developers complete code faster. To monetize these models, IBM offers a paid tool called Watsonx, which helps ensure the smooth operation of customized data centers.
The tech giant’s strategy is to take advantage of customers’ AI models when they are actually used, whether those models come from IBM or another company, and whether they operate in IBM’s data centers or not.
“We believe we are in the early stages of generative AI models,” IBM Chief Executive Arvind Krishna told Reuters.
“Ultimately, competition is good for buyers. We also want to be safe and responsible.”
In addition, the Saudi Arabian Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority will use Watsonx to train its “ALLaM” Arabic language model, extending IBM’s language capabilities to include multiple Arabic dialects.
