After more than six weeks of voting in the world’s largest democracy, India has been waiting for this day: the announcement of election results that will chart the country’s path for the next five years and quite possibly longer.
Narendra Modi, India’s most powerful politician in a generation, is seeking a third consecutive term as prime minister, which would make him only the second Indian leader to achieve the feat.
In the months leading up to the election, about three dozen opposition parties formed a grand alliance called the Indian National Development Inclusion Alliance (INDIA), hoping to bring their votes together for a more forceful fight against Mr. Modi The formidable Bharatiya Janata Party.

Modi sells himself to voters as the man who will keep India moving forward at home and abroad. His opponents warn that his continued leadership would put India’s democratic and secular foundations at serious risk.
As the results come in, Indians will be keeping a close eye on the trend lines for Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party. Gained only 52 seats in Congress.
To mount a serious challenge to Mr Modi, the Congress party must significantly improve its performance this election.
The BJP has set higher goals for itself in the 2024 general elections. But the newly united opposition alliance hopes to bring the party beyond its stated goal of 400 seats in the lower house of parliament, or even narrow its majority.
