Country music star Ingrid Andress went viral after singing the wrong national anthem during MLB’s Home Run Derby on Monday night, saying she was Drunk and looking for help.
“I’m not going to bully you, I was drunk last night,” Anders posted on Instagram. “I’m checking my facility today to get the help I need. That wasn’t me last night. I’m sending a message to the U.S. I apologize to Major League Baseball, all of our fans, and the country that I love so much.”
Andress has a lovely singing voice most of the time. Last year she gave a captivating Tiny Desk concert, if you want to see proof that Anders can sing. (I was in the room! She could sing and she was so nice!) But Andress is not traditional Belt; Her gift lies in observation and conversation, and in getting at subtle truths without exaggerating.
Also, unless your name is Whitney Houston, The Star-Spangled Banner is famously It’s a difficult song to sing (lots of high notes and low notes, and the melody doesn’t flow easily) in a grand, high-pitched setting that inspires soaring bombast.
Ordinarily, if you want to show off, Andress is not the singer you turn to. Combine that with her state of mind Monday night, and you can see why her “Star-Spangled Banner” derailed so quickly.
There yes It was a way to approach the song without being too tricky—keeping it subtle and restrained—and early in the performance, Anders seemed to be following that tradition. But she soon began bending and curling her syllables in a hyper-stylized way, which seemed to set off a chain reaction as she went further and further off-key on her way into power notes.
Before Anders revealed the cause of the disaster, the viral video seemed like the hilarious diversion many of us needed after a week of horrific news. But at least the singer is keeping a sense of humor about it. She ended her Instagram post this way:
“I’ll show you what recovery looks like.[.] I heard it was very interesting.
