JERUSALEM (Reuters) – Israeli troops tied a wounded Palestinian man to the hood of a military jeep during an arrest operation in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin on Saturday.
A video circulated on social media and confirmed by Reuters showed Mujahed Azmi, a Palestinian resident of Jenin, passing two ambulances in a jeep.
The Israeli military said in a statement that Israeli troops opened fire on a suspect and exchanged gunfire, wounding one suspect and arresting him.
The statement said the soldiers then violated military protocol. “The suspect was taken away by police while tied to the roof of the car,” the statement said.
The military stated that “the behavior of the troops in the incident video is not in line with the values of the Israeli military” and that the incident will be investigated and dealt with.
The military said the man had been transferred to medical staff for treatment.
Reuters matched the location to confirmed and verified footage shared on social media showing a vehicle carrying a man tied to the roof of a car in Jenin. A witness interviewed by Reuters confirmed the date.
According to Azmi’s family, an arrest was taking place and he was injured in the raid. When the family called for an ambulance, the army took Mujahid away, tied him to the hood and drove away.
Violence in the West Bank had increased before the Israel-Hamas Gaza war and has since been rocked by frequent military attacks on militant groups, Jewish settler atrocities in Palestinian villages and deadly Palestinian street attacks The violence continues to escalate.
