Italian high jumper Gianmarco Tamberg has made a groveling apology to his wife after losing her wedding ring at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony.
The 32-year-old world champion was waving the Italian flag as the boat carrying the Italian athletes sailed down the Seine when the ring slipped from his finger.
“I’m sorry, my love, I’m so sorry,” he wrote in an Instagram post for his wife, Chiara Bontempi Tamberi.
The athlete blamed the accident on “losing too much weight” and “uncontrollable enthusiasm.”
“If it happened, if I had to lose this ring, I can’t imagine a better place to be,” he wrote. He claimed the ring will now “remain forever in the riverbed of the City of Love.” superior”.
He calls this doom “poetic” and suggests that they also throw Chiara’s ring into the river.
“[Then] They will be together forever and we will have another reason to renew our vows and get married again,” he said.
“Only you can turn this into a romantic thing,” Chiara wrote alongside her husband’s apology.
The two got married in September 2022.
As Turnberry waved the Italian flag with three-time Olympic medalist Arianna Errigo, the ring fell off, bounced off the boat and disappeared into the river.
He describes it as “several moments lasting eternity.”
Tamberg previously made headlines at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics when she shared the high jump gold medal with Qatar’s Mumtaz Essa Bashim. Both chose not to go beyond the 2.37m hurdle they had already cleared.
Since 2011, he has also gained attention for wearing a half-beard during matches as his “signature” style.
