A Venice man was arrested and charged with homicide Tuesday morning after allegedly beating the manager of a popular Santa Monica bar, who died shortly after, police said.
Just after midnight on Tuesday, police responded to a report of a battery near Jameson Bar, a bar popular with sports fans.
“A fight broke out in the street when the manager of Jameson’s asked several patrons to leave,” the Santa Monica Police Department said in a statement.
“While on the street, a customer struck the manager, causing him to lose consciousness,” the statement said.
When police arrived, the victim was not breathing, prompting police and Santa Monica firefighters to attempt to revive him with CPR. He was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead, according to police.
Leonard Hector Korpie, 26, was one of three people arrested early Tuesday. He was charged with homicide by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
His bail is set at $2 million.
