Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) offered a devastating account of Republicans across the country defending Trump, a convicted felon.

“They were traveling across the country trying to exonerate a fraudster and convicted felon who had just been found guilty at trial by a jury of 12 of his peers,” said Jamie Raskin. Because he paid his mistress $130,000 in hush money and then made false accounts to engage in more financial fraud. ” pic.twitter.com/VpEUm6Qecy

When asked by MSNBC’s Katie Phang how Democrats could block hearings like the one Dr. Fauci received this week from House Republicans, Raskin said:
Democrats, Liberals, and Pravda must be tough. I think Dr. Fauci showed that toughness this week, he’s not a partisan actor, but he’s just a scientist and he just said this is nonsense, it’s ridiculous. I mean, my Republican colleagues and right-wing commentators are saying that Dr. Fauci created the COVID-19 virus to make money from it. They accused him of somehow profiting from COVID-19, which he explicitly refuted and shut them down.
But as I told Dr. Fauci at the hearing, they treated him like a convicted felon. Then I have to correct myself. I say no, they actually treat convicted felons much better than they treat doctors who dedicate their lives to saving people’s lives. And, you know, if you look at Dr. Fauci’s record, it’s not just about COVID-19, but HIV, Zika, and a whole host of other diseases. As a physician, scientist and medical leader, he saved hundreds of thousands of lives through his work.
Yet all they could do was beat him. Meanwhile, they crisscrossed the country trying to exonerate a tried sex offender, a tried fraudster and a convicted felon who was judged by the 12 jurors selected by both sides in his trial. He was found guilty by a jury of $130,000 in hush money. This is who defines their party.
Rep. Raskin tackles this big problem. The problem is not just that Trump is running around trying to destroy democracy front and center. This issue is bigger than Trump taking over the Republican Party. The real problem is that Trump is defining the Republican Party.
Donald Trump is establishing what the Republican Party stands for and believes in. The former president is rewriting his ideology to suit his personal needs.
The takeaway from Raskin’s devastating account is that as long as the Republican Party remains defined by Trump, they will continue to lose elections.
