SAINT-DENI, France – Julien Alfred has won St. Lucia’s first Olympic medal. And not just a medal – gold – against the favorite in the 100m.
Alfred slowed the field as he sprinted past American Shakari Richardson on a wet track on Saturday night.
Richardson won the silver medal. After an apparent injury this month, Richardson’s biggest challenge in the event, Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson, withdrew from the 100m to focus on the 200m. Then, less than two hours before the race, Shirley-Ann Fraser-Pryce posted a “no start” message. It was unclear why the semi-finalists from Jamaica were unable to compete.
St. Lucia first participated in the Olympics in 1996 in Atlanta.
