President Biden on Baltimore Port reopening
The president responded to the news of the port’s full reopening in a statement:
I have made clear that my administration will do everything in its power to reopen the Port of Baltimore, one of our nation’s largest shipping hubs. Today, thanks to the tireless efforts of the men and women of Unified Command, the full channel is now open to all vessels, allowing commerce to return to full force in the Port of Baltimore.
The U.S. Coast Guard was on the scene within minutes of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse. They established a unified command that day to support rescue and recovery operations and worked around the clock with the Army Corps of Engineers to clear debris from the waterway. My Departments of Transportation and Labor and the Small Business Administration are working with federal and state partners to limit supply chain impacts and lower costs for Americans, and to support impacted workers and small businesses. I want to thank Governor Moore for their steadfast leadership, Mayor Scott, County Executive Olszewski, and the Maryland congressional delegation. The partnership between federal, state and local governments, labor leaders like the longshoremen who keep the centers running, and the business community shows what we can accomplish when we work together.
Our hearts go out to the families of the bridge collapse victims, and we will continue to stand with the community throughout the recovery process. Thank you to the people of Baltimore for showing us what it means to be strong in Maryland and strong in Baltimore. Baltimore can count on us to support them every step of the way, and we will continue to support you until the bridge is rebuilt.
Second. DOT Pete Buttigieg on how Biden administration reopened ports so quickly
In a call with reporters, Buttigieg told PoliticusUSA:
I would point out that the Biden-Harris administration has put us in a strong position to respond to a shock like this, thanks in large part to the work of the White House supply chain, the Disruption Task Force and the experiences we’ve faced over the past few years, Particularly during COVID-19, we have taken steps that put us in a strong position to mitigate future disruption to our supply chains and economy, even though we would never have imagined it would be through our innovative secure data sharing program One of the disruptions caused by COVID-19, we created a product called FLOW, initially to respond to disruptions caused by COVID-19 and later used in situations like the Red Sea disruption, and we’ve been regularly sharing data with public and private partners to help monitor things like this How local freight needs are changing.
This immediate collective action has helped us meet the challenges of recent weeks. Right now, we are redoubling our efforts to prepare for future disruptions and support our national economy through the President’s Council on Supply Chain Resilience. We will continue to support the people of Baltimore and Baltimore workers and do all we can to support the community, the state, and Baltimore. city and rebuild the bridge. We also continue to remember the six families who continue to grieve after the deaths of six construction workers who were working on road improvements. We recognize that there is still a long way to go before the bridge is rebuilt, but this is a critical milestone and a remarkable moment that, I think, preceded many of the observers who saw that horrific footage. was to be expected, thanks to the teamwork of many different actors within the federal government but certainly beyond it.
Biden shows what competent government can accomplish
Unlike the Trump administration, the Biden administration has been consistently effective. The American people have never seen a story about the Biden administration failing to achieve its stated goals at home. In some quarters, the corporate media’s obsession with covering drama and failure means that capable government is viewed as boring and ignored.
The Biden administration has consistently made government work, and effective governance should not be ignored by voters as the country experienced the destruction and death that incompetent government could cause during the Trump administration.
The Port of Baltimore is opening sooner than many thought because Joe Biden got the job done.
