Vice President Kamala Harris now leads Donald Trump in Morning Consult’s weekly registered voter tracking poll.
According to Morning Consult’s weekly tracking poll:
– Harris now leads Trump in our tracking: In our first full survey after President Joe Biden announced he would not seek re-election, Harris leads Trump 46% to 45%.
– Harris unites Democrats: Nearly two-thirds of Democratic voters support Harris replacing Biden as their preferred candidate, double the 30% who said the same after Biden’s poor debate performance late last month twice as much.
The tracking poll also found room for growth among independents, with Harris leading 40%-38%, with 10% not knowing and 12% choosing someone else. Harris still has room for improvement among Democrats, with an approval rating of 89%, while Trump’s approval rating among Republicans is 91%. Even 5% will vote for the other party’s nominee. If Harris can gain a few more points among Democrats and Independents, her approval rating will exceed 50%.
Trump has begun to return to his normal approval rating of around 45%.
Those numbers are before Harris names her running mate or holds a convention, so her ceiling as a candidate is much higher than Trump’s.
As more Democrats return home, Harris’ support should continue to grow and voters get to know her better. Donald Trump is a well-known entity. His support is a fact, but if Kamala Harris takes off, she could leave Trump far behind.
