Mostly solitary creatures, green dragons R&D Known as masters of intrigue, con men, they love manipulating and deceiving their prey, stalking any poor adventurer who wanders into their woodland domain with meticulous cunning until they seize the best opportunity, with fangs and claws Tearing it apart and spewing poisonous gas from within. Although this has not changed Dungeons and DragonsIn their latest iteration, they’ve received some design updates to better match their duplicitous nature.
“For the Green Dragon, we made some major changes to its design, hoping to better express the dragon’s personality,” said Josh Herman, head of the company. R&D Wizards of the Coast’s art team told io9. “We also wanted to give the green dragons a new style of movement that is unique among chromatic dragons. Their movements showcase the cunning and cunning nature of green dragons, while also giving them a more serpentine look.
Herman and the art team looked at the green dragon’s original stat blocks for 5th Edition Monster Manual as a starting point for how they wanted to redesign the beast for this new era. exist [the Monster Manual] It says that the green dragon is ‘the most cunning and cunning of the true dragons, using misdirection and trickery to fight against its enemies,'” Herman explains. “This is really a wealth of information! It also states that the ancient green dragon has an Intelligence of 20 – meaning it has the highest intelligence of all the chromatic dragons.
“Those two things alone tell us a lot and talk about what we’d like to see in an updated design and a lot about how this creature operates or behaves in the world,” Herman continued. . “Being smarter than other colorful animals and being the most manipulative of animals reminds us of real-world animals we associate with these characteristics, such as snakes.”

I like to imagine a green dragon constantly scheming and planning to seize power, but since it doesn’t have the raw power of a red dragon, it needs to carry out those plans in a different way. So instead of kicking down doors and burning down towns, it lures people into the forest where it can manipulate and trick them, making up lies about why they were brought there and making up stories about how they need to help the dragon. The green dragon will use its intelligence and other area of effect effects to make it as invisible as possible because it knows that reaching its goals early will not help it achieve them.
Green dragons enjoy collecting sentient creatures and delighting in corrupting and bending them to their will. This feels like a strong connection to the more serpentine design, you can imagine the dragon slowly surrounding, coiling around someone until they are too deep to escape.
For the entire project, the green dragon is also the first dragon design implemented in the dragon project. We worked with several artists early on in the process, but it was artist Simon Lee who made this one “popular.” Simon is a traditional sculptor who works with clay, creating many small clay sculptures that explore how dragons move and express their personalities.
He created a sculpture of a green dragon with a long neck, compact body and long tail. We were immediately drawn to it – it’s a familiar visual of dragons, but one we haven’t seen in Dungeons & Dragons dragons. This also opens up and solidifies the idea that each dragon could have a different body shape, or have something special about it from a physical biology perspective.
A huge thank you to Simon and all the other artists and illustrators for their work on this project!
