If you’ve been enjoying watching sci-fi shows lately, e.g. three body problem and for all mankind, There’s a new play coming to the stable. Neal Stephenson’s science fiction novels Chinese Valentine’s Day It will soon be adapted into a TV series for the small screen.
As of deadline, Legend Television has acquired the television rights to the 2015 novel. The book centers on Earth’s best scientists, who all realize that an incoming meteor will shatter the moon into seven pieces on impact, killing humanity within the next two years. Over time, the nations of the world banded together to find ways to ensure humanity’s survival. After a major time jump, the book shifts focus to exploring the consequences of humanity’s conservation efforts, so you can imagine how this would make for a great TV show. As of this writing, it’s unclear which streamer or network will pick up the series, as Legendary has partnered with everyone from Netflix and NBC to Prime Video and HBO.
After its release, Chinese Valentine’s Day Got great reviews. It competed for the Hugo Award in 2016 and won the Prometheus Award for Best Novel that same year. At one point, it was even adapted into a movie by Skydance, with Ron Howard directing. Over time, those plans seemed to have slipped away, opening the door for the show to happen. With the renaissance of science fiction in television over the past few years (and forward-thinking science fiction as well), now is obviously the perfect time to try and bring this book to life, so here’s hoping it comes to fruition in the near future.
