Liverpool footballer Darwin Nunez got into an altercation with the crowd after his national team’s defeat to Uruguay on Wednesday night.
The striker was seen getting into a physical altercation with Colombian fans in the stands after the final whistle of the Copa America semi-final.
According to Uruguayan media reports nationriots broke out near where the players’ friends and family were.
Nunez has yet to comment publicly on the incident.
Television cameras and fans captured Nunez climbing the railing and entering the packed stands at U.S. Bank Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.
He can then be seen confronting Colombian fans while others try to stop him.
Other Uruguayan players were reportedly involved in the incident.
According to Reuters, Uruguay captain Jose María Jimenez said the players were trying to protect their families and described the situation in the crowd as a “disaster”.
He continued: “There are no police and we have to protect our families. It’s the fault of two or three people who drank too much and didn’t know how to drink.”
Uruguay missed out on Monday’s Copa America final after losing 1-0 to Colombia in their last four games.
Shortly before the crowd unrest began, players and coaching staff clashed on the field after the game.
Nunez started the game against Uruguay but failed to convert all four of his attempts.
Liverpool signed the striker from Portuguese side Benfica in June 2022 for £64 million.
BBC News has contacted Nunes’ representatives for comment.
Colombia will face Argentina in Monday’s final.
