Britain’s “ugliest” dog’s transformation into a Hollywood star is unexpected and “surreal”, her owner says.
Page appears in the latest Marvel superhero film, Deadpool and Wolverine, alongside Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman.
The five-year-old pug – a cross between a pug and a Chinese crested dog – was chosen as “Dogpool” after rising to fame last year. Voted the ugliest dog in last year’s national competition.
Reflecting on the past 18 months, Peggy’s owner Holly Middleton, from East Yorkshire, said: “Never in my wildest dreams did I think something like this would happen.”
“When we submitted her photo [to the ugly dog competition]I didn’t think it would reach the heights it did,” she added.
“I don’t think it’s going to be a big deal.”
Peggy will appear at a cinema in Hull later. she is Will meet fans at Kingswood Cineworld10:30 BST.
However, despite having amassed a “huge fan base”, Mrs Middleton said Peggy was not displaying any “star behavior” at home.
In contrast, Purgess, who is usually “reserved and lazy,” gained “more confidence” from the trainer who took care of her during the filming of “Deadpool and Wolverine.”
“She’s just plain old Peg,” Mrs. Middleton said.
The 37-year-old makeup artist said the family missed Paige when she was away filming.
“It’s really, really weird that she’s not here,” her owner said. “I have two boys and they miss her terribly.
“We didn’t tell them where she was. Everything had to be quiet.
“I’m glad she’s back. We miss her.”
Watch Peggy make her debut at the New York premiere and be Hollywood A-list stars take to the red carpet Mrs Middleton said it was “surreal”.
“I loved it. Peggy looked very comfortable throughout the whole thing, as probably most people would have been hugged by Ryan Reynolds.
“They seemed to really love her and be very gentle with her, you could see… they were kissing her and stroking her head gently.
“I loved every second of it. I loved seeing her out there doing her thing.
“She looked chilled and happy.”
Mrs Middleton said there were no plans for future film roles and Peggy was content chilling at home.
“First and foremost, she is a family pet,” she added. “There’s nothing she loves more than cuddling on the couch with us, or snuggling up in bed.”
Despite Peggy’s global recognition, Mrs Middleton said she was “just like any other dog walked around the village” – although she “absolutely loves” attention and is used to it.
“When I read the comments online, they were all very positive and very supportive of Peggy and saying how beautiful she was.
“Before all this, her appearance would draw attention to herself, but usually people would be pushing each other and whispering, ‘Oh, what’s wrong with that dog’.
“So the public’s perception of Peggy, whether she’s beautiful or ugly or whatever, has definitely changed for the better since all this happened.”
