A 39-year-old man was shot and killed on a Metro train in the Baldwin Hills area Friday night, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Police were called to the 5600 block of Jefferson Avenue, near the La Cienega/Jefferson station on the E line, around 7:40 p.m., said Officer Derek Madison, a spokesman for the department.
He said that before the shooting, the victim had an argument with four male suspects that “culminated on the train.” He said one of the suspects pulled out a gun and shot the victim.
Madison said the suspects, who range in age from 15 to 20, were seen fleeing the area on foot or possibly on skateboards.
Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to the incident, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene, Madison said.
He said it was unclear whether the incident was gang-related.
As of 11 p.m., E Line service between the Expo/La Brea and La Cienega/Jefferson stations remained disrupted and replaced by shuttles due to police activity, according to the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
The shooting is the latest in a series of recent violent incidents on the Los Angeles subway system.
In May, a passenger was shot dead on a bus in Commerce City. That same month, a woman’s arm was cut in an elevator at the Vermont/Athens station and two people were stabbed during a fight on a Glendale bus.
In April, a 66-year-old woman was stabbed to death near the B Line Universal City station.
A spate of violent attacks prompted Mayor Karen Bass in May to order increased enforcement on the bus and rail systems, calling the surge in violent crime “absolutely unacceptable.”
