Betfred Premier League match highlights between Warrington Wolves and Hull Kingston Wanderers
Hull KR beat Warrington Wolves 22-4 to top the Betfred Premier League table.
Wolves looked strong as they climbed to the top of the table with five consecutive wins last weekend, but the hard-working Robins kept them grounded with a fine performance at Halliwell Jones Stadium.
Strikes from Jesse Sue and Tyrone May gave the visitors a 10-0 half-time lead and tenacious defending kept Warrington at arm’s length before crosses from Mitch Lewis and Peta Shiku sealed victory.
A 12-point lead, helped by two conversions from Jez Litten and another from Lewis, was enough for East Hull to move ahead of Wigan Warriors on points.
Willie Peters’ side fully deserved their success as they took the game to Warrington and took the lead from the sixth minute when SU fell over from Matt Parcell’s pass.
Wolves struggled to contain Hull KR, who thought they had scored again when veteran Ryan Hall touched down on a kick from Lewis, but his effort was disallowed for a collision.
There was no such argument and the visitors extended their lead after 19 minutes, with May scoring cleanly this time from Lewis’s ‘bomb’.
He appeared to have another win when Oliver Gildart picked up a loose ball and raced over, but the Robins were again frustrated by the video referee and the game was ruled out for a Hall collision. put off.
Warrington introduced new player John Bateman as a substitute and finally started to come alive in the final stages of the first half. However, they were also denied by officials, with attempts by Josh Thewlis and Josh Drinkwater being called off.
The Robins’ defense was solid as the home side increased the pressure, with Roderick Tye taking a timeout after a good break from George Williams and Hall bravely collecting Matt Dufty’s dangerous kick.
Warrington continued to press after the restart but Tai Tzu Ying could not find a way past Lewis. However, Hull KR were finally breached when Dufty found Matty Ashton cutting a pass down the wing and the winger fired the ball into the corner.
Robins stemmed the tide, however, and extended the lead as some patchy defensive work from the home side allowed Lewis to collect a bouncing ball and get it over the whitewash.
Warrington were beaten and after Lewis had a shot attempt blocked, ex-Wolves player Hiku forced a breakaway from the corner to set up a memorable win.
what did they say
Kong KR head coach Willie Peters:
“We’ll probably only end up top at the weekend. We’ll enjoy that but Wigan are playing again [on Tuesday].
“Obviously it’s good where we are but we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves. There’s still a long way to go.
“I’m really, really proud of the players. That was a performance from Hull KR and we worked really hard to get there.”
warrington wolves head coach Sam Burgess:
“I thought Hull KR were outstanding. They dominated us everywhere, ran harder than us and tackled harder than us.
“There are a lot of lessons to be learned and we know our performance was nowhere near where we wanted to be.
“The game is in full swing. They showed us that and we still have some work to do.”
