Brighton have made contact with experienced former Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels, according to Sky Germany.
The 35-year-old became a free agent after leaving Dortmund at the end of last season.
He made 508 appearances in all competitions for Borussia Dortmund in two separate spells and 78 appearances for Germany, although he was not selected for this summer’s European Championships.
Hummels played a key role in the Bundesliga side’s run to the Champions League final, but they lost 2-0 to Real Madrid at Wembley.
Brighton are interested in signing a centre-back and are searching for a replacement in that position under new manager Fabian Huerzeller. The youngest permanent head coach in history, aged 31.
Brighton signed wingers Jankuba Minter and Ibrahim Osman this summer, as well as midfielders Mats Weaver and Malik Yarkoue, but has yet to strengthen defensively.

Brighton are in talks with Celtic over a deal for Matt O’Reilly, with Chelsea and a number of other clubs interested in the midfielder.
O’Reilly has been the subject of bids from Atalanta this summer, with other clubs from the Premier League and abroad also interested.
The Denmark international made 49 appearances for Brendan Rodgers’ side last season, scoring 19 goals and providing 18 assists as Celtic beat Kilmarnock 4-0 in Sunday’s Scottish Premiership opener. In the game, he scored the second goal.

The 23-year-old is contracted to Celtic until 2027, with the club rejecting a £20m bid from Atletico Madrid in January.

“I’d like to see him give it another try in the Champions League with Celtic at the moment. Unless it’s a big enough move, stay for another season.”
