World Boxing Organization (WBO) European vice-president Istvan Kovacs has publicly claimed that Algerian boxer Imane Khelif is biologically male.
The claim, which raises serious questions about the fairness of women’s sport, was made in an interview with Hungarian news outlet Magyar Nemzet.
Kovac revealed that he raised concerns about male participation in women’s boxing to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as early as 2022.
“The saddest thing in the story is that the problem was not Khleif’s testosterone levels, which can now be adjusted, but the results of a gender test, which clearly showed that the Algerian boxer was biologically male,” he said.
Kovac further elaborated that five boxers, including Khalif, were tested by the International Boxing Association (IBA) and the results were all male. Despite reporting these findings to the IOC, he regretted that there was no response or action from the IOC.
