Jake Sherman of Punchbowl News posted, “@SpeakerJohnson has appointed Reps. Scott Perry (R-Pa.) and Ronny Jackson (Texas) Enter the House Intelligence Committee. The Intel Committee oversees the entire intelligence community and obtains some of the most sensitive intelligence about the United States and its allies.
Rep. Jackson, Trump’s former White House physician, has been spreading disinformation and conspiracy theories about Democrats for years. Jackson served for a time as the White House physician when a Department of Defense report found that former President Trump essentially ran a drug factory out of the White House.
Rep. Scott Perry has been closely linked to Trump’s 2020 coup attempt. Rep. Perry sought to have Jeffrey Clark appointed acting attorney general in order to use the Justice Department to overturn the election results. There is evidence that Rep. Perry is directly tied to attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election, and his appointment to the Intelligence Committee in a presidential election year in which Trump is the presumptive Republican nominee is deeply troubling.
A more important question involves why Speaker Johnson is now adding these two Trump allies to the Intelligence Committee?
Speaker Johnson is preparing a legislative push to defund special counsel Jack Smith, but the addition of Jackson and Perry should set off alarm bells for those looking for the next potential area of Republican attack on democracy and the 2024 election.
