Charles Leclerc unleashed the pace many expected from Ferrari at the Monaco Grand Prix, finishing top of the second practice session at the home race.
With Lewis Hamilton leading the opening race earlier on Friday and Leclerc opting not to use the soft tire, Leclerc was in a league of his own when he finally got the chance to run the fastest tire on the street track .
Hamilton completed an encouraging day for Mercedes in second place, eventually closing the gap to Leclerc to within two-tenths, with the seven-time world champion taking advantage of the changing surface.
Despite finishing 11th in first practice, world champion Max Verstappen continued to struggle with the Red Bull’s handling and finished fourth, finishing behind Leclerc. More than half a second later.
McLaren’s Lando Norris was fifth but did not run a new set of soft tires for the race, while Leclerc’s Ferrari team-mate Carlos Sainz was sixth.
