Hall of Fame center and two-time NBA champion Bill Walton has died at age 71 after a battle with cancer, the NBA announced Monday.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver released a statement on Walton’s death on Monday.
“Bill Walton is truly unique,” Silver said. “A Hall of Famer, he redefined the center position. His unique all-around skillset made him a dominant force at UCLA and helped him win NBA regular season and Finals MVPs, two NBA championships and an NBA 50 Strong and 75th Anniversary Team Subsequently, Bill translated his passion and love for the game into broadcasting, delivering insightful and colorful commentary that delighted generations of basketball fans, but it is he who I will most fondly remember. It’s his passion for life.
“As a cherished member of the NBA family for 50 years, Bill will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him,” Silver continued. “My heartfelt condolences go out to Bill’s wife Lori, his sons Adam, Nate, Luke and Chris, as well as his many friends and colleagues.”
This is a development story. There will be more to come.
