Web3 Music (W3M), a new global music industry trade body that aims to “promote research and development across the industry,” has officially launched.
W3M brings together prominent entities from the music, finance and technology sectors to “collaborate, explore and leverage advanced technologies” including artificial intelligence, blockchain and mixed reality.
Sergio Mottola, described by W3M as an executive with “expertise in finance, advanced technology and international regulatory frameworks,” will serve as the organization’s president and CEO.
Charlie Rapino, a record industry veteran who currently serves as Artist First’s vice president of A&R and communications, has been named vice president.
W3M Executive Vice President of Music and Chief of Staff Giulia Maresca and Executive Vice President of Ecosystems Katy Campbell also join the leadership team.
The association brings together various individuals and companies in the music industry to form what it calls “a discussion network and test group for some of the latest advanced technological ideas in the music field.”
This group includes [PIAS]Beggars Group, Blue Raincoat Music, EGA Distro, Hospital Records, Russells Solicitors, Tileyard, Artist First, Karta, Le Son, PublicPressure, Roba Music Publishing, Toco Music.
W3M’s advisory board includes other well-respected industry executives such as Ted Cockle, former president of Island Records, VirginEMI and Hipgnosis Song Fund; Andy Saunders, founder of Velocity Communications; Andrew Hale ), producer and member of Sade; Claudio Ferrante, president of Milan-based record label and publisher Artist First; Paul Sears, founder of music management company Visionary Sapiens Also CEO.
In a press release announcing the product, W3M said “the digital environment continues to evolve, and so does the way we create and consume music.”
The announcement added: “The music industry is also making positive progress in the digital integration of copyright and licensing, while understanding the need to adapt to new ideas and develop new solutions.”
To this end, the association has also launched the Music Protocol, described as “a digital infrastructure designed to transform music copyright into a dynamic asset that adapts to the evolving digital environment.”
W3M said the framework combines technology solutions that can support the music industry, such as generative AI and game licensing.
