PunchBowl News Coverage:
Three key members of House Speaker Mike Johnson’s policy team will leave his office at the end of May, leaving the top House Republican without a key core of experienced aides.
Brittan Specht, Jason Yaworske and Preston Hill all worked for former Speaker Kevin McCarthy , they will head to Michael Best Strategies, a lobbying firm with offices in Washington, D.C., and across the country.
The departure was shocking in scale and experience, depriving Johnson of considerable expertise in domestic policy. Specht was McCarthy’s policy director and a key figure in crafting the Fiscal Responsibility Act, which raised the debt ceiling and set budget levels for two years.
Yaworski is a well-respected adviser to the Speaker on appropriations and budget issues. Yaworske’s expertise on government spending will be needed as the House Appropriations Committee begins marking up fiscal year 2025 spending bills.
Hill is a longtime figure in Republican leadership, overseeing House Republican policy on cryptocurrencies, artificial intelligence and emerging policy areas such as education, labor and financial services.
The resignations came shortly after Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene ousted Speaker Mike Johnson.
MTG filed a recusal motion against Speaker Johnson last month. She introduced the resolution to the House of Representatives a few weeks ago.
The House quickly rejected MTG’s motion, however, as Johnson faced strong resistance after losing the support of members of his own caucus.
Not only did Mike Johnson fund Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan without committing money to protect U.S. borders, he also committed to protecting hired gun Jack Smith.
Jack Smith previously admitted that he lied to the court and tampered with evidence in connection with his classified documents case against Trump.
