At least six newborns died in a fire at a Delhi hospital, police said.
A fire broke out at a hospital in the Vivek Vihar area of the Indian capital on Saturday night.
Senior police officer Surendra Choudhary said there were 12 babies in the unit. Another person died before the fire broke out.
Authorities said they would take legal action against the hospital owner who escaped.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said the fire was “heartbreaking”.
“The cause of the incident is under investigation and whoever is responsible for this negligence will not be spared,” Kejriwal said.
Delhi Fire Department chief Atul Garg told the Press Trust of India news agency that 14 fire engines were dispatched to put out the fire.
But he said: “The fire spread too quickly due to the explosion of the oxygen cylinder.”
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on X: “The tragedy of a fire in a Delhi hospital is heartbreaking.
Earlier on Saturday, a “big fire” broke out at a game ground in Rajkot, in the western state of Gujarat.
Local officials said at least 27 people died. Many of the victims are believed to be children.
