Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley ended her Republican presidential bid against former President Donald Trump, saying at an event in Washington that she “will vote for Trump.”
Haley made the remarks at an event at the conservative think tank the Hudson Institute, her first on the matter since dropping out of the race in March.
“I’m going to vote for Trump,” she said in response to a host’s question at an event. “That being said…Trump would be wise to reach out to the millions of people who voted for me and continue to support me, rather than thinking they will only support him.”
The remarks were not a formal endorsement of the former president – her plea for Trump to “reach out” to her supporters echoed remarks she made when she dropped out of the race. President Biden is trying to court Haley’s voters in a 2024 rematch with Trump.
On the Hudson incident, she was asked who she thought would do a better job handling national security-related matters in the White House, President Trump or President Biden. Haley responded with a smile: “As a voter, my priority is a president who can support our allies and hold our enemies accountable.” She said that while “Trump is not perfect on these policies… Biden is a disaster, so I will vote for Trump.”
Despite dropping out of the race, Haley still gained a sizable share of the vote in the Republican primaries, receiving about 16% of the vote in Pennsylvania and nearly 13% in Wisconsin, both battleground states.
