Nikki Hiltz, a biological woman who identifies as transgender non-binary, earned a spot on the U.S. Olympic team on Sunday after winning the women’s 1,500-meter trials over the weekend qualifications.
Hiltz’s run set a game record. Hiltz’s time of 3 minutes, 55.53 seconds broke the record set by Elle St. Pierre in 2021.

“I told myself I wouldn’t think about all the love and support until I ran 100 meters,” Hiltz told Runner’s World. “Then, in that moment, you can let it all fill you up and push you towards the finish line.” That’s exactly what I did, and I think that’s what brought me home.
Hiltz also noted that this is the last day of Pride Month.

“I can’t believe it. I mean, this is bigger than me,” Hiltz told NBC Sports. “It’s the last day of Pride Month. I wanted to host this event for my community and yes, all LGBTQ people. You guys brought me home the last hundred [meters]. I can feel the love and support.
Hiltz continued to celebrate Monday.
“When I wake up, I become an Olympian,” they say.
