At Sunday’s BET Awards, OJ Simpson used the “In Memoriam” segment to remember the “black luminaries” who died the previous year.
The alleged double killer appears alongside names such as actor Bill Cobbs, baseball player Willie Mays, film producer Clarence Avant and actor Carl Weathers. Simpson is known as a “former NFL player.”
While many of the names received cheers and applause from the audience, TMZ’s footage shows Simpson’s name eliciting some applause and murmurs that continued for the next few names.

Simpson died in April at the age of 76 after a battle with prostate cancer. Although Simpson had a prolific career in the NFL and acting, he is best known for the brutal slayings of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman in 1994 Goldman was acquitted in the criminal trial.
The case has been called the “trial of the century,” and his acquittal is considered one of the most controversial verdicts in the history of the American justice system.
Goldman and the Brown family subsequently sued him in civil court for wrongful death, finding him responsible for the death.

In 2008, Simpson was also convicted of armed robbery and sentenced to 33 years in prison, with a minimum of nine years to be served before being eligible for parole. Simpson was released from prison in October 2017.
