Times of disruption present unique opportunities for agencies to create life-changing change for their businesses. Most people know that some bad decisions and careless actions today can have a negative impact on their future. But they often forget, and vice versa. Good decisions and purposeful actions today can also positively change their future.
However, there is a process and this article details the simple steps you can take to build your dream business.
S: tired of tired of tired
There are two emotions that can lead to change. The first happens when you are tired of your career and the way your life is going. Maybe your business has stalled or even declined. You may be burned out and unsure if you want to stay in this business.
This sentiment leads agents to either leave the company or realize that in order to get different results, they have to do something different. If you decide to persevere and make a change, the first step is to choose your pain. Could the pain of regret, or not doing what needed to be done to regain motivation, be worse than the pain you currently face from feeling tired of your current situation?
This change starts with identifying the actions in your business that you know you need to do but have been avoiding. These could include making more phone calls, investing in marketing, filming video content, or any activity that agents avoid doing even though they know it will help their business. Whatever it is for you, getting to a place where you can overcome short-term discomfort and transform your career and life is one of two ways you can change your mindset and move toward success.
One: Inspiration
The second factor that can lead to change is when you are inspired by external forces to strive for something better. This can be through speakers, videos or spending time with truly inspiring people. This is rarely a one-time event.
Inspiration must be ongoing and sustainable to create real change, but it is one of the most powerful emotions for those who desire something more.
Once you realize that you need to change, whether through being sick and tired or through inspiration, the next step is to get into practical activities and concrete actions that you can focus on to regain the motivation you want.
M: Create a movement
People want to be a part of something greater than themselves. If you’re an agent or manager, this means creating a campaign that agents want to be a part of.
By creating an aspirational culture, you will attract the agents you want to build business with. If you’re an agent, create a campaign that gets buyers and sellers willing to work with you.

Create a community
People are attracted to community. This can be achieved through a collaborative culture within the company or developing a culture where agents are proud to be associated with the company.
Agents can do this through client appreciation events, donating to local charities in honor of their clients, or any other community event that brings the agency’s clients together. The key is to create a community that people are proud of.
Become a connector
Whether connecting your buyers with local business owners, homeowners with handymen, landscapers, or any other needed service, your ability to serve as a resource and connector is invaluable. If you are the one who connects your agents or clients with the people they need, others will naturally be attracted to you and your business.
Attract your ideal customers
The best way to attract your ideal clients is to attract them by providing them with information and guidance in a unique way. Get specific with your marketing by calling out your ideal customers.
Here are some examples:
- If you are a first time home buyer and want to know what price range you qualify for, this video is for you.
- If you’re considering selling your home, this video shares the three biggest mistakes most homeowners make and how to avoid them.
- If you are an investor and have been looking for the best income generating properties [your city]this video is for you.
When you create content that educates and entertains your ideal customers, they will find you.
P: Focus on people and your goals
To change your life, you must focus on others and be rooted in a higher purpose. Let me focus on the people part first. Dreams come true by helping others or serving others, and in most cases, both.
I talked about how to attract your ideal customers in the previous section, but knowing who your ideal customers are can make your messaging clearer. It gives you an idea of what your marketing should focus on and where it should be distributed. Focus on serving your ideal customers and you’ll never be short of business.
The second group of people to focus on are employees and service provider partners who can help you deliver world-class service to your ideal customers. Building mutually beneficial lender, inspector, and insurance provider relationships is a great way to build a trustworthy team that will grow with you.
From an employee perspective, a transaction coordinator, personal assistant, or customer service coordinator can give you the leverage to serve more people at a higher level.
The reason why it’s so important to stay focused on your goals is because this business will test you. There will be disappointments and difficult transactions.
The key is to focus on the real reason you are in this industry. Maybe it’s a better way to live for your family, make more money, or even, in some cases, prove your past doubters wrong. Whatever it is for you, your ability to focus on your goals will allow you to overcome any obstacles this business throws at you.
L: Keep learning
When you decide to become the most stable student on the market, it’s only a matter of time before your business grows. Learning how to become a better negotiator, marketer, or communicator can increase your value to your clients, which in turn leads to more business.
E: Execute
Execution is the key to everything. You can learn all you want, and you can focus as much as possible on your goals, but until you execute, nothing will happen. In order for things to change, there has to be a tough season. There will be a season of struggle in order to create momentum and change in your life. But it’s worth it.
This is your time and opportunity to change your future. Whether your change is triggered by pain or inspiration, this is the season when you move from where you are to where you are destined to be. Make decisions and take action now that your future self will thank you for.
