Ilya Sutskever is leaving OpenAI, and we have questions. Especially one of them.
Tuesday night X announced the moveThe company’s chief scientist said the decision to leave was his own.
“The company’s trajectory has been nothing short of miraculous, and I believe OpenAI will build AGI that is both safe and beneficial under the leadership of @sama, @gdb, @miramurati, and now @merettm’s outstanding research leadership. It’s been a privilege to work together,” I will miss everyone very much,” Suzkowir wrote, adding that his next endeavor is a project that is “very personally meaningful” to him and that details will be announced “in due course.” “

CEO of Open Artificial Intelligence Posted by Sam Altman also spoke about the move, calling Suzkower “unquestionably one of the greatest thinkers of our generation.”
“OpenAI wouldn’t be what it is without him. While he has some personally meaningful things to do, I am forever grateful for what he has done here and committed to completing the mission we started together. I’m very happy to be able to do this.
Altman also pointed out that Jakub Pachocki, OpenAI’s research director, will become OpenAI’s next chief scientist.
Mix and match speed of light
While both Altman and Sutskever said Sutskever’s departure was related to his ambition to build a project that was personally meaningful (both used the exact same phrase), it’s hard not to compare this move to OpenAI’s recent leadership crisis Altman was temporarily kicked out of the company during the crisis.

It was so obvious what was wrong that the internet turned the situation into a meme. “What did Elijah see?” Once quoted One-time OpenAI investor turned critic Elon Musk has mentioned a (conspiracy?) theory that Suzkweil saw something worrisome in Altman’s leadership that prompted his initial support for the ouster Ultraman.Whether it was a joke or not, the question was immediately posed as a reply to both men suction spoon and ultramanPosts on X.
It wasn’t just Sutzkwer who stayed, there were others. Researcher Jan Leike, who co-leads the OpenAI Superalignment team, which is working on the “guidance and control” problem of artificial intelligence that is much smarter than humans, has also left the company. Earlier on Wednesday, he simply tweeted “I quit.”

Musk detailed his concerns about OpenAI in a lawsuit against the company he once invested in. In the document, he asked that OpenAI become a nonprofit again, arguing that the company’s latest artificial intelligence model is too powerful to be owned (essentially) by Microsoft, which owns a large stake in OpenAI. It’s unclear where Suzkweil stands on the matter.
Given the tone of Sutskever and Altman’s posts, it’s unlikely we’ll find out (any time soon) the complications surrounding Sutskever’s departure from OpenAI. Still, it’ll be interesting to see what Sutskever’s new “personally meaningful” projects will be.
OpenAI launches ChatGPT AI voice assistant
With all the turmoil happening within OpenAI, the company appears to be on an upward trajectory, recently launching its most powerful public artificial intelligence model to date, GPT-4o.
