The Washington Post reported:
House Speaker Joanna McClinton (D) on Wednesday introduced former U.S. Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn and former Sergeant Aquilino Gonell as “heroes” for their “valiant defense of the United States Congress.” Democracy in the building, against the January riots and rebellions”. 6.’
When the two men, both injured by rioters on January 6, were introduced, the House fell into chaos. Several Republican lawmakers booed and hissed, and some walked out of the chamber in protest, according to Democratic lawmakers.
“I heard some hissing and I saw about 8 to 10 of my Republican colleagues walking out angrily as they were announced as police officers at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th,” state Rep. Arvind Venkat (Arvind Venkat) said on the phone. “I’m shocked and appalled.”
Pennsylvania House Republicans displayed their extremism by booing and walking away from heroes who defended members of Congress from both parties against the mob that Donald Trump incited to block the certification of Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory.
The actions of Republicans not only showed disrespect for the police, but also disrespected the principles of the peaceful transition of power and the democratic process. If Democrats retain control of Pennsylvania’s House of Representatives, where they currently have a one-seat majority, they will be able to shut down any plans by Trump to overturn the election results if Biden defeats the former president again in the Keystone State.
The actions of state House Republicans are a shameful embarrassment to all Pennsylvanians and show why they should not be allowed to return to power.
