A flight encountered “severe turbulence” and made an emergency landing in Brazil. It was reported that 30 people were injured.
European airlines said the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner was flying from Madrid to Montevideo when the mid-air incident occurred.
The Spanish company said on X (formerly Twitter) that flight UX045, en route to the Uruguayan capital, had been diverted to Natal Airport in northeastern Brazil.
It added that the injured passenger was “receiving attention”.
A spokesman for Air Europa said the plane, carrying 325 passengers, encountered turbulence over the Atlantic as it approached the coast of Brazil.
The plane landed normally and was greeted by a convoy of ambulances.
Airport officials said some passengers required medical assistance and were taken to the nearest hospital.
The local medical team told Brazilian media that they treated at least 30 passengers of different nationalities, 10 of whom were sent to hospital.
The team added that the patient was struck on the head in the turbulence and suffered injuries including skull fractures and facial cuts.
The incident occurred just weeks after the Singapore Airlines flight Severe unrest over Myanmarresulting in dozens of injuries and the death of a British man.
Severe turbulence is rare, but Recent research suggests climate change may increase risks.
