According to Politico magazine, Republicans claimed that “divine intervention” saved former President Trump from assassination and praised him as a “martyr.”
The former president was nearly assassinated during a campaign event on Saturday night when a gunman fired multiple shots in his direction. Trump was hit in the ear and quickly removed from office by the Secret Service.
Trump was later declared safe by medical authorities, but experts noted that the bullet came within an inch of being fatal, suggesting that his turning away at the rally may have saved his life.
“I’m not going to be a conspirator if someone goes out on an open roof within 130 yards, but something went wrong,” Donald Trump Jr. said in an interview with Fox News Digital.
Experts say split second shift could have saved Trump’s life: ‘God must have been watching him’
“As far as I’m concerned, this is truly divine intervention,” he concluded.
Others have also described the situation as a “miracle,” with Politico saying in a story titled “Republicans receive ‘divine intervention’ in Trump’s near-martyrdom,” which was almost a whimper for the former The apotheosis of the president.
The article stated: “The support for divine intervention among his supporters – many senior Republican officials – further cements Trump’s position within the party as not only its leader but also considered to have been chosen by a higher power. The one who saves the country.
The article quoted multiple Republicans on the first night of the Republican National Convention who thanked God for sparing Trump’s life.
“The devil came to Pennsylvania with a rifle, but an American lion reared up and roared,” exclaimed Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C. “If you didn’t believe in miracles before Saturday, you better believe now.”
“I thank God that His hand is on President Trump,” said Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia.
“We thank him for protecting our next president, Donald J. Trump,” said Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin.
Trump himself referenced God in a post on The Truth Society the morning after the shooting, which killed one of his supporters and seriously injured two others.
“Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers yesterday as only God prevented the unthinkable from happening,” Trump wrote. “We will not be afraid, but will keep our faith and defiance in the face of evil.”

However, former British ambassador Peter Westmacott gave Politico a more cynical view of the Republican Party’s views on religion.
“It’s very good for the victims and the martyrdom line that Donald Trump has been using throughout his campaign,” Westmacott said. “I’m sorry to have to say that — it’s a cynical observation. But that’s what people think after feeling the horror, ‘Oh my God, is this another political assassination?'”
Several religious leaders also expressed prayers and surprise that Trump survived.
