Sarah Ferguson pays tribute to Princess Diana on her birthday.
Ferguson paid tribute to the late princess on Instagram to celebrate her 63rd birthday. The former royal posted a photo of the pair smiling while standing side by side on the balcony of Buckingham Palace during the Battle of Britain anniversary parade in September 1990.
“Happy birthday to my dear friend Diana. You are a pillar of light and love. What a legacy you leave behind,” she wrote in the caption. “I will always remember our laughter and the gracious, kind spirit I found in you. I believe you were always watching over us. Rest in peace my friend.”
When Princess Diana married Prince Charles and Fergie married Prince Andrew, the two became very close during their time as royals. However, their friendship goes back much further, with the pair first meeting when Diana was 14 and Ferguson was 15.

The two joined the royal family just a few years apart. Princess Diana married current King Charles in July 1981, and five years later, in July 1986, Ferguson married Prince Andrew.
Ferguson, who became the Duchess of York after marrying Prince Andrew, admitted on the podcast that she often turned to Diana for help when learning the ropes.
“I remember when I first became a princess with Duhe [Diana’s nickname], I watched her working in a room and I imitated her. I copied her, how she did it, because she was so incredible,” she explained. “She immediately threw herself into it wholeheartedly. Full of heart and energy, she left everything at the door.
