Boston left-hander James Paxton strained his right calf after starting five pitches against the visiting Houston Astros on Sunday, the Red Sox announced.
Paxton limped off the field with two outs in the first inning after covering first base on Yordan Alvarez’s grounder to first baseman Dominic Smith. Alvarez beat out Smith for an infield single.
Boston head coach Alex Cora and a coach visited Paxton, who limped back to the dugout with the coach’s help. Right-hander Lucas Sims replaced Paxton.
On July 26, Boston traded Paxton, who will play for the Red Sox in 2023, in exchange for minor league infielder Moises Bolivar. Overall, he is 9-3 with a 4.40 ERA in 21 starts this season.
Paxton, 35, has made 177 starts with the Seattle Mariners (2013-18, 2021), New York Yankees (2019-20), Red Sox (2023, 2024) and Dodgers A 73-41 career record and a 3.77 ERA.
