Back in March, Sen. Bob Menendez, who is under investigation for corruption, said he would not seek re-election in November. In May, Menendez became more specific and said he would not seek the Democratic nomination to run for re-election.
Now we know Menendez was just playing on words, as he just filed papers to run for re-election as an independent.
Despite facing multiple serious corruption charges, this guy just can’t back down from his position. He wants to keep his job as a senator and all the benefits that come with it.
Hill reports:
Menendez files for independent bid for Senate seat
Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) filed Monday to run for re-election to the Senate as an independent as a federal bribery trial continues.
Menendez announced in March that he would not seek the Democratic nomination for the Senate seat but left the door open to potentially seeking an independent run. The longtime senator faces multiple charges in a wide-ranging corruption case in which prosecutors accuse him and his wife of taking bribes in exchange for favors from three businessmen.
Menendez, who has pleaded not guilty, filed paperwork for an independent bid a day before New Jersey’s Tuesday candidate deadline…
Entering the fall, Menendez seemed likely to seek and win re-election, but demands came after he and his wife were accused of accepting more than $600,000 in bribes from businessmen. There were widespread calls for resignation.
He apparently doesn’t even have employees.

The decision could hurt New Jersey Democrats.
For the first time in a long time, New Jersey Republicans may have a chance to win a U.S. Senate seat…

Why are so many in the Senate so unwilling to give up their jobs? Are the benefits really that good?
