Baseball’s top infield prospect Coby Mayo is expected to make his major league debut for the Baltimore Orioles on Friday, according to multiple reports.
Mayo, 22, has played parts of four minor league seasons since being drafted by the Orioles with a 2020 fourth-round draft pick out of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. The OPS is 0.929.
Mayo, rated the No. 15 prospect by MLB Pipeline, is batting .301 with 20 homers and 61 RBIs in 77 games with Triple A-Norfolk this season.
His call-up may be in response to an injury to All-Star infielder Jordan Westberg, who was placed on the ten-day injured list Thursday. Westburg, 25, suffered a broken right hand after being hit by a pitch from Yerry Rodriguez in the fifth inning of Wednesday’s 10-4 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Orioles will face the Guardians in Cleveland on Friday in the second game of a four-game series. Baltimore lost 10-3 to the Guardians on Thursday and tied with the New York Yankees for first place in the AL East.
