Political coverage:
House Republican leaders are privately weighing support for legislation that would allow current and former presidents to move state cases to federal courts, four Republicans familiar with the matter confirmed to POLITICO. It looked dead in the water.
…
But it’s unclear whether the bill, spearheaded by Rep. Russell Frye (R-S.C.), has the votes needed to pass the House, according to three people familiar with the matter, all of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity. Even if it manages to pass the House, it will almost certainly die in the Democratic-controlled Senate.
House “MAGAs” are pressuring Speaker Mike Johnson to allow a vote on the bill to show support and unity with Trump, a gesture that would be difficult if Republicans bring the bill to a vote but fails to pass it It will be counterproductive.
The problem is, there are currently 19 House Republicans holding seats in districts that President Biden won in 2020.
For those Republicans, any vote to protect Trump could be career suicide. Republicans in Biden districts won and were able to keep their seats by not being part of Make America Great Again. If they are to vote to change the law to protect Trump, votes will be used against them every day until the end of the 2024 election.
Not even House Republicans can help Trump, a convicted felon.
