Trump was not preparing for the debate but formulating policy, with Republican senators trying to educate the cognitively declining former president ahead of the debate.
Maggie Haberman and Anderson Cooper report on CNN:
He’s not conducting a moot. He didn’t do moots, that will surely change. But he’s been doing what they call policy time, and they’re inviting different people to brief him. Last week, Sen. Marco Rubio and Sen. Eric Schmitt came, both at the Republican House after he met with lawmakers around Capitol Hill. He was briefed at the party’s national committee headquarters, his first major meeting with party members since becoming president.
They’re looking at various issues that might come up, abortion, health care, energy, COVID-19, and then very specifically, this is one thing that came up last Thursday, Trump would say when asked about it on January 6 What, specifically his statement about pardoning some of those arrested in connection with the day’s violence.

When news broke that Trump was preparing for the debate and had not made any preparations for the debate, there were reports that Trump had serious memory problems. Senate Republicans are trying to teach policy knowledge to a man who has been president for four years and is dealing with serious memory issues.
What could possibly go wrong with this idea?
We’ve seen what can go wrong because it’s already happened.
When Trump was president, he refused to read or prepare and forced those around him to give him verbal briefings, which explains why he seemed to learn nothing during his four years in the White House.
