Joe Tay Gilbert Already locked in on his college decision.
Gilbert has gone through a series of ups and downs in recent months and is now at home with various plans laying the groundwork for a Rivals250 safety recruitment.
Gilbert, the third-ranked SAF in the Rivals250 at Douglas High School in Atlanta, Ga., plays in Georgia on Saturday against North Carolina. The four-star defensive back tried out in Athens in late May and caught the attention of the entire defense with a 4.51-second 40 time.
donte williams, travaris robinson and Glenn Shuman Since then, everyone has attacked one of the best teams in the Peach State with gusto. The Dawgs took the lead when Gilbert returned to school in late July.
“This is where I feel I can have the most success on and off the court, where I can develop best,” Gilbert told me opponent He decided to commit to Georgia.
“To play at Georgia, you have to be different,” he continued. “You compete at the highest level and you have to work at Georgia. I fit in all those categories there.”
Gilbert committed to Ohio State as an underclassman and, after a wave of official visits in June, spent much of the summer leaning toward North Carolina State.
Georgia quickly closed the gap on the Wolfpack and began to surge once Rivals250 SAF entered campus.
“It depends on how I see myself,” Gilbert explains. “My last visit to Georgia was an eye-opener. This is where I can see myself in the next few years.”
Gilbert established a bond with Robinson and Williams during their previous stops and deepened it once they arrived in Athens.
The versatile 6-foot-1, 185-pound defensive back likes numerous Georgia coaches, including H.C. Kirby Smart.
“It’s a good thing when a head coach works with your position group,” Gilbert said. “It’s been really good for me to work with him and all those guys … as they develop players and put them in the league.”
“The coaches at Georgia told me what it was and how to do it, they knew what I was good at and they were going to help me perfect my technique,” he continued. “They stayed in touch with me a lot.”
