Sam Altman sent artificial intelligence enthusiasts into a panic when he posted a seemingly harmless photo of strawberries in his garden.
On Wednesday, the OpenAI CEO shared the photo along with a cryptic comment: “I love summer in the garden.” But Altman wasn’t just thinking about his appreciation for late-summer crops. He is teasing a secret OpenAI technology called Project Strawberry.

The makers of ChatGPT are developing a model capable of advanced reasoning that is a step closer to autonomous artificial intelligence agents, according to a Reuters report about the project last month. Internal documents leaked to the outlet describe Strawberry (formerly Q*) as a model that enables “the company’s artificial intelligence to not only generate answers to queries, but also plan far enough in advance to autonomously and reliably Browse the Internet to perform what OpenAI calls ‘deep research'” .'”

More advanced reasoning capabilities mean the technology can perform more complex tasks beyond step-by-step user prompts. Reasoning has always been one of the most difficult problems in the pursuit of human intelligence, so strawberry will become a breakthrough in realizing AGI (artificial general intelligence).
Tempering expectations for bumper strawberry harvest
That said, plans and timelines for the reported technology are unclear. Alternatively, Altman’s post may simply be an attempt to draw attention during a tumultuous time for OpenAI. As of this week, co-founder John Schulman resigned and co-founder Greg Brockman announced he is taking a leave of absence (or furlough in Brockman’s case). The number of executives continues to grow. Add to that growing concerns about the AI bubble bursting and Wall Street’s cooling interest in AI, and OpenAI’s future suddenly looks even more precarious.
Since OpenAI rocked the industry with ChatGPT, progress has slowed. Altman praised GPT-5 as a “significant leap forward,” but still didn’t say when it would be released. Researchers say the model’s training data has been exhausted, and OpenAI is reportedly losing billions of dollars. These are not positive signs for new product shipments in the near future.
Therefore, Ultraman’s tweet may indicate that official news about Strawberry is imminent, but it may also be just empty words from the ultimate hype man with a record of “blatant lies.” Maybe we’re taking these strawberries with a grain of salt.
