A 46-year-old man who was part of an ocean swimming group that regularly trains in waters north of San Diego was attacked by a shark Sunday morning in Del Mar, prompting officials in the beach city to seal off the water until later in the week.
City officials said the attack occurred around 9 a.m. Sunday in the water near 17th Street in Delmar. said in a statement.
Officials said the victim suffered bite wounds to his torso, left arm and hand and was transported to a local hospital for treatment for injuries they described as serious but unlikely to be life-threatening.
After the attack, lifeguards began posting signs at beaches within a mile of the incident, prohibiting swimmers and surfers from entering the water.
Officials said the water outage will last until 9 a.m. Tuesday.
Last week, surfers and swimmers were banned from the waters at another Southern California beach, officials said: “Aggressive Behavior of Sharks.”
In that attack over Memorial Day weekend in San Clemente, a shark knocked a surfer off his surfboard.
