On November 8, 2022, the term of the current mayor Libby Schaaf expired, and Democratic Sheng Tao was elected mayor.
On January 20, 2023, Sheng Tao was sworn in as mayor.
After the FBI raided the home of Oakland Mayor Sheng Tao on Thursday, a former chief of staff said she believed the mayor should resign.
Although the FBI did not tie Thao to illegal activity, former mayoral chief of staff and trusted advisor Renia Webb has spoken out about the pay-to-play allegations.
CBS News reports,
Weber worked closely with Thao and had access to a period of four months a year that few others have access to. Weber served as Thao’s right-hand man and served as chief of staff when Thao served as the 4th District Councilman.
Weber said she volunteered and spent countless hours working on Thao’s 2022 mayoral campaign.
“A lot of what’s going on right now is why I resigned shortly after winning the election that we fought so hard to win,” Weber said.
She said she was more sad than surprised that FBI agents raided Thao’s home on Thursday.
“I wasn’t surprised. I thought, ‘Finally. The truth is finally out,'” Weber recalled.
Weber accused Thao’s boyfriend, Andre Jones, of being Thao’s mastermind and carrying out the pay-to-play scheme during Thao’s campaign for mayor and after he won.
“I found out that her boyfriend, Andre, was promising people jobs in our government and promising to appoint people to different committees and boards,” Weber said. “I absolutely believe, from the people who told me, they were promised positions, they were promised board positions. And [they would always say] Andre, you know what? That’s what they said, ‘Andre assured me of this.
According to Weber, Jones took control and “called the shots.” She said Thao followed in his footsteps.
“It’s sad. He asked her to do things, pushed her to do things that I didn’t believe she would do. I really don’t know,” Weber said.
Jones and Thao met while working for Assemblymember Rebecca Kaplan. Jones was Kaplan’s chief of staff and Thao was an intern.
“When I first mentioned it to Sheng, in that house that was searched [on Thursday], people come to me to fulfill Andre’s promise,” Weber explained. “Her response to me was, ‘Ignore Andre. You’re going to make close to $200,000. Just ignore it. It hurt my heart. I just looked at her and told her ‘I don’t care about money.’
After Thao won the election in November, Weber said she would resign on New Year’s Eve 2022.
She said the council ignored her complaints. The ethics committee later sent an email requesting evidence, but Weber was unable to provide physical evidence and the complaint went nowhere.
No one was shocked: Thao, who was already facing a recall vote, was under intense pressure after the latest raid. Even the Oakland chapter of the NAACP, a prominent left-wing group, called on her to step down. This emphasizes her failings as a leader and the overall distaste for her handling of the proceedings.
When conservatives say DEI means the death of the integrity of our government, they mean it.
Maybe we should stop calling everyone a racist because we don’t want thugs taking over the mayor’s office just because they’re not white.
