On July 4, one person died in an exchange of gunfire with police in Yellowstone National Park.
The man was armed with a gun and “making threats” in the Canyon Village area in the center of the park. When rangers confronted the man, they opened fire, the park said.
A park ranger was injured in the shooting and is in stable condition at a nearby hospital.
The FBI is investigating the incident with the assistance of National Park Service agents. Part of the park near Canyon Lodge has been closed as law enforcement continues to investigate.
“There is no active threat to the public,” the NPS said.
The person’s identity has not been released.
